Deck: Morgan-Greer Tarot

For my daily draw today, I pulled the 5 of Cups. When I view this card, there are many emotive qualities that lean towards the negative aspects of the scene depicted including the three cups that have been spilled over. But, I see the positive: the two cups that are still standing and are full.

The three spilled cups have wine or blood; blood is often used as a metaphor for the flesh in religions like Christianity. In numerology, 3 represents things coming together. In this instance, what has come together has been separated, emptied and is flowing until it disappears into the dry earth. However, right behind the figure in the card are two cups that stand upright and full. in numerlogy, 2 represents new beginnings; there is still hope and we can start again. In the distance of the barren landscape of the present, is a castle on top of a fertile cliff. Birds–perhaps sea gulls–fly over the sea and above the castle and symbolize movement. The waters are calm, not stormy. Perhaps the feelings of despair and gloom were just an illusion.

Two days ago, I drew The Moon as my daily reflection card and yesterday, I pulled the 7 of Cups from my Victorian Romantic Tarot. There have been many illusions as of late. Indeed.

I have much on my mind about the current state of affairs and how I am dealing with them, but based on my emotional state, I am optimistic and positive. There is still much to be grateful for and life is full of challenges that we must meet.

Today marks the last day in 2009 and tomorrow the start of a new year, 2010. While it seems cliche to think of that as a new beginning, it is in many ways. And with the Full Moon in the sky–and Blue Moon at that–I’m looking forward to enjoying a quiet New Year’s Eve tonight with my boyfriend’s parents. I’m taking it easy; we both need to, and that’s just fine!

Associations: Possessions; financial growth; status

The King of Pentacles was an interesting card to pull after Christmas. Although the court cards in Tarot can stand for a specific gender, they are also universal. Since my daily draws for this blog are specifically on what I should focus on, when interpreting this card, I can see how it can be associated with myself or other people in my life.

The colors in the share a similar connection and are all strong colors: yellow/gold represents strength, growth and health; green reminds us of the connection to nature, fertility; purple denotes victory and power. The King stares forward. His skin color is gold and a gold helmet crowns his head. Purple horns adorn the sides of the helmet, a metaphor for victory and his connection with primal instinct and nature. He is dressed in a green robe, decorated with ivy and grapes, symbolic of fruition and abundance. He holds a staff in his left hand and a pentacle in his right indicating that he holds his ground both consciously and unconsciously. Everything is balanced in this card.

When I view this card, I think of confidence, a wealth of knowledge and material gains. Since the king is the highest order in the court, the card represents the culmination of the qualities of the suit; the person in the card is mature , wise and secure. In a weakened state, I see dishonesty, bitterness, issues with money and one’s current status.

Associations: Emotions; feelings; relationships

The 10 of Cups can represent a pleasant event, relationship, job or a deal gone right.

The two arms in this card hold one cup together, a gesture of unification, cooperation, positivity and celebration. A rainbow flows out of this cup into the sky, across nine other cups that appear in the background in a diagonal pattern like a ladder. I see each cup as a stepping stone and each cup represents and achievement, the ninth cup the highest goal. In numerology, the number 9 represents accomplishments. And the number 1, symbolic of the one cup being held by both parties, shows the importance of a solid building block, purity and strength. The background of the surrounding meadow with trees and lush grass-covered hills denote growth and things coming to fruition. The calm water is metaphoric of the serene atmosphere.

The 10 of Cups was one of those draws that feels perfect. My 34th birthday was this past Tuesday and my boyfriend made this week very special. The holidays are in full swing, and have been since November, which was the last time I posted an entry on the blog (more on that later).

Tarot Card of the Day – November 25, 2009: 7 of Cups

I pulled the reversed position of this card. Along this Tarot journey, I have been playing around with various ways of reading reversals. I have found that the cards arouse a variety of different emotions and that the connections. And, along with the focus, elemental dignities and other facets, the voice of the card is heard and can cover the full spectrum of meanings if you are open to it.

The 7 of Cups is an interesting card and in the Morgan-Greer version, there are only objects in the card. The first thing that comes to mind is a that the scene is a mirage or a dream. The items in each of the cups are floating on clouds and don’t really exist unless you work to obtain them.

We desire to be victorious, to being wealthy or stable, to be in a happy relationships, to achieve our goals and enjoy or partake in creative ventures. But, if your head is in the clouds and you allow your emotions to take over, your dreams will not become a reality. You need to make it happen! Or, perhaps the dreams are unrealistic and you are becoming greedy; you will need to find the middle ground.

This was the perfect pull for today. I have much to do to prepare for Thanksgiving tomorrow. The turkey roast is defrosting and I have baking to do! I am spending it with my mother and it’s the first Thanksgiving I am spending with her in many years. We are both thrilled. And our dreams? They have become a reality. It has taken a lot of work, but we now have the best relationship we have had in years. Those cups don’t feel like they are filled with riches and are suspended in the clouds anymore.

Three Card Spread – November 23, 2009:

Deck: Morgan-Greer Tarot

Cards: 9 of Pentacles; 4 of Swords; 2 of Rods (Wands)

I drew the 9 of Pentacles last Monday. However this week, shows that the card needed further clarification or is calling out to be noticed. In this three card spread, the path to enjoy the fruits of labor, is laid out quite clearly.

Pentacles is indeed the focus and the outcome of this spread when I view all of the cards together. The 2 of Rods (Wands) shows the desire to seek for more. The man holds his wand in his left hand, denoting action, and an orb in his right hand, symbolic of his unconscious desires. His shield is decorated ornately with red roses and lilies, symbolic of his passion and will to grow. A comrade holds the other wand.

However, to in order to reach these goals–in addition to taking action–he must learn the full meaning of what he wishes for by retreating and seeking the answers from within. A time of rest and reconciliation of affairs is in need. In the middle position of the spread is the 4 of Swords. A knight lays at rest with four swords suspended above him. The sky is stormy, but this will pass and it will soon be sunny. Like the change of weather, we too, will experience that moment of clarity of thought. And, when that happens, we will know what we need to do to reach our goal or goals. The outcome is what is denoted in the 9 Pentacles.

The 9 of Pentacles represents the celebration of fruitful gains through hard work or inherited riches, if a person is in a position to acquire such things. I am drawn to the color purple used in the card, which is symbolic of victory, riches and royalty. But, the tone here is not that of greed. While the woman wears her pentacle necklace indicative of her earthly possessions, she puts a sprig of grapes into a bowl; she is giving back what she has earned.

Summary:

It’s great to set goals and set out to achieve them, but in order to focus, we have to clear our thoughts of any potential doubts that may be lingering. If we can pass that hurdle, we can set out to achieve what we desire, and in the process, we can reap in the rewards and give back to others.

Reflections: False Alarms and Finding “The Deck”

False alarm. The Holi Palloi is not the deck. I thought it was, but that’s due to the excitement that Tarot decks bring. Synchronicity was in the works when I found that second Hoi Palloi deck. How could I not think it was the deck.

And what’s all the buzz surrounding the deck and the desire to find it? I wasn’t going to force the issue and choose any deck to be my working deck I’ve been collecting them because the artwork is beautiful, the designs vary, the colors are different, and each one invokes different emotions when I view the cards.

Let’s get to the point. Part of the fun when starting any new project (or hobby in this case) is that you tend to dive in head first. What’s a newbie to do? There is so much information to absorb! Decks? There are hundreds, if not thousands, for you to choose from. Sure, I should have just stuck with the first deck I acquired, but discovering new decks is fun! Before I knew it, I was six months in and owned 20 decks. Many were ones that I found and were out-of-print (OOP) or collector’s items. Many are new editions. When you are starting out, focus is essential. The heart of the issue here is that I was searching for the deck. I wanted to find one that I could use when reading for myself and others as well.

I found it. Really. It’s the one I am going to focus on, and having realized that, my Tarot journey is fun again! The connection was immediate and I’ve spent plenty of time this week bonding with the cards.

The deck? Well, it’s the Morgan-Greer Tarot.
