On Why I Needed a Blogging Break…

Has it Really Been a Month? Really, a month? Well, almost. I haven’t posted an entry on here since March 2nd. That entry was an odd one of sorts as well. I sold that deck. Then, I needed a break. It happens.

Over the course of the past few months, I have been building my Tarot collection, finding myself in readings, and new and interesting ways to incorporate Tarot into my life. However, none of the learning and discovery has been mentioned here as  of late. I’ve struggled with the voice of this blog. Do I want it it to be a depository for daily readings and reflections? Or, do I want to use a private print journal? Do I want to post the newest decks I have discovered or my latest finds and purchases, even if they aren’t new, mass market or well known? Do I want to post random observations?

aurarcana Tarot blog – The Tarot School’s first featured blog for 2010 in “Tarot Tips”

aurarcana is honored to be The Tarot School’s first featured blog for 2010 (January 2010) in their monthly “Tarot Tips” newsletter!

I just learned this news today when I received and email from the Tarot School’s very own Ruth Ann Amberstone.

I am flattered and quite humbled to be honored by the prestigious The Tarot School. This blog was created as an outlet for me to write about my experiences with Tarot and to harness my web design skills (which I currently use at my day job). It’s been a hobby of sorts in so many ways.

There are so many great Tarot blogs an I thought that would be an opportune time to mention some of my favorites:

Synchronicity – My Tarot Card Focus for 2010

Cat ‘N Owl has an interesting writing prompt “Picking your tarot card focus for 2010” that can kick start the new year and help you focus one Tarot card for the entire year. Aside from journaling and generally reflecting on it, you can take it one step further by meditating with it. If you let your imagination roam free and lose yourself in the imagery, you will learn something new.

Grab a deck and remove all of the Major cards from it. Shuffle the Majors only and focus on the question: What do I need to be focusing on this year?

I drew The Hierophant from The Victorian Romantic Tarot. Since I am also using The Bohemian Gothic Tarot to offer a shadow interpretation, I pulled the Hierophant from that deck so that I could view them together.

Happy New Year: Number 5, Number 5, Number 5 & Fool’s Gold

Happy New Year! Out with the old, in with the new! It’s 2010 and while I steer away from New Year’s resolutions, I do see the benefits of setting a general tone for the year.

The Tarot Lady wrote a fun blog post with a formula to find your number for the year using numerology based on the month and day you were born in and the current year. The creative part? Well, that involves music and thinking about how certain songs evoke emotions in all of us.

Let’s get started!

By using Chris Delorey’s Creative Numerology site, you can follow the formula for “Your Yearly Forecast”:

My birthday: December 8
Month = 12
Day = 8
Year = 2010

To find your number, add all of the numbers up as single digits and then reduce that sum even further into a single digit.

Reflections: False Alarms and Finding “The Deck”

ace-rods-morgan-greer-tarotFalse alarm. The Holi Palloi is not the deck. I thought it was, but that’s due to the excitement that Tarot decks bring. Synchronicity was in the works when I found that second Hoi Palloi deck. How could I not think it was the deck.

And what’s all the  buzz surrounding the deck and the desire to find it? I wasn’t going to force the issue and choose any deck to be my working deck I’ve been collecting them because the artwork is beautiful, the designs vary, the colors are different, and each one invokes different emotions when I view the cards.

Shuffling the Deck of Life: 9 of Pentacles and Prosperity – The Hoi Palloi Tarot

Tarot Card of the Day – November 16, 2009: 9 of Pentacles

Deck: Hoi Palloi Tarot

hoi-palloi-tarot-9-pentacles

Element: Earth
Associations: Possessions; financial growth; status

This card represent being able to celebrate and enjoy the fruits of labor. There is much to be thankful for and it’s time to enjoy the benefits of hard work. The grapes in the vineyard symbolize growth and maturation and are analogous to success in life. You can be both the giver and the receiver of the bounty. Now is a time of prosperity.

The bird on her hand shows a connection to the earth and being in tune with her surroundings. The bird sits on her left hand denoting action and conscious thought.

Reversed meaning:

I pulled this card in the reversed position. I am still undecided on how I feel with reading reversed meanings on their own, or if I would like to include them as part of the overall interpretation. Regardless…

The Gift Part III: Is This “The Deck”?

Sunday, 15 November 2009, 18:33 | Category : 2009, beginnings, hoi palloi tarot, sentimental, tarot classes
Tags : ,

hoi_palloi_setsI have homework this week. Yes, one of my assignments from the Tarot class I am taking was to find a working deck to bond with and to use for readings with myself and others (yes, others at a later date).

Over the past five months, I have amassed a collection of 22 decks (and one Oracle).  My collection isn’t the focal point of this post. I simply love discovering new ones and knowing that I have options to read with a variety of decks depending on my mood or situation.

I have been focusing and learning using variations of the RWS and have played with daily drawings from some of the decks that I feel comfortable with at this stage. But, I’m yet to find the deck. Yes, the deck, the one I want to make mine. Sure there are no deadlines with this. And, the homework assignment is just a point in this short four-week long class. I knew that I was going to have to bring one deck with me to learn with. I didn’t even do that for the first class; I brought two decks since I wasn’t sure.

Reflections: Attending My First Tarot Class

Wednesday, 11 November 2009, 23:12 | Category : 2009, beginnings, sentimental, tarot classes
Tags : ,

I attended my first Tarot class tonight, and of course, my mind is buzzing afterwards. It’s late, or rather, it’s late for me since I wake up at 5:10 a.m. to head to work in the morning in New York City. I figured it was best to write my thoughts down now while they are fresh.

The class was held at Paranormal Books & Curiosities in Asbury Park and the instructor, Linda Fate, was welcoming from the start. It’s an intimate setting; there were only four students including myself in the class! With it being only an hour long, us students didn’t exchange any intros about interests, work or Tarot experience. That part would have been nice, but at the same time, perhaps the hidden element appeals to some. Regardless, we may get to know each other better over time…

Shuffling the Deck of Life: Judgement On the First Day of…Tarot Class

Tarot Card of the Day – November 11, 2009: Judgement

Deck: Universal Waite Tarot

judgement-universal-waite

Question: How will I approach my first Tarot class?

Today I start a four-week long Tarot class at a local new age store. How fitting is Judgement as my daily draw and focus card? Very. This was one of the few times that I actually asked a question before pulling my card of the day. I went with my Universal Tarot, which is the deck I will be using in the class. I have been flirting with other decks since I have discovered a fascination with collecting them, but I want to focus with one learning tool right now. Although, I am sure that I won’t be able to resist occasional draws from other decks.

Shuffling the Deck of Life: Courage

Tarot Card of the Day – November 4, 2009: Courage

Deck: The Fairy Tale Tarot

courage-the-fairy-tale-tarot

Courage in the Fairy Tale Tarot is based on the story “Little One Inch“.  Based on the typical Rider-Waite-Smith meanings (RWS), Courage is equivalent to Strength.

What is it like to face our fears? Do we feel bold? Do we feel cowardly? When I view this card, I feel a sense of bravery and fearlessness, much like I did with yesterday’s draw, the Princess of Swords. The difference between the two is that The Princess of Swords is part of the Minor Arcana and the course of events are affected by will, whereas the Courage card is part of the Major Arcana and represents a specific point of growth along the Tarot journey.
